The Town of Goderich has welcomed the first ship into its harbour for the 2025 season.
The Federal Asahi, under the direction of Captain Abhijit Menon, arrived Sunday at the Port of Goderich.
Staff at town hall, including Mayor Trevor Bazinet, welcomed Captain Menon with the ceremonial Top Hat ceremony.
Goderich’s Top Hat ceremony involves a signing of the ceremonial top hat by the first captain to arrive in the harbour, who is then treated to a breakfast by town hall officials.
Rather than a breakfast, Captain Menon treated town hall staff to refreshments aboard the Federal Asahi.
With trade talks between Canada and the U-S dominating the news, Menon says any new trade barriers are not likely to affect his job.
“I don’t think there will be any change at all,” Menon tells Bayshore Broadcasting News.
“Those things are generally handled by a different department entirely. They will be the ones who will be at the forefront of this.”
