A confirmed tornado touched down in the Township of Chatsworth Saturday afternoon and there were also sightings of another tornado in the Goderich area.
David Rogers with Environment Canada confirms a tornado touched down in the Chatsworth area around 4:45 p.m. on Saturday.
He says there is no preliminary damage rating for the twister yet. But the Northern Tornadoes Project team that performed a ground assessment on Sunday says it can be rated at least a high-end EF1. The tornado’s length on the ground is around 13.5 kilometres and width was about 400 metres, the NTP team says.
EF1 tornadoes have wind speeds between 138-177 km/h, and cause moderate damage such as roofs being stripped, and windows or glass broken.
There have not been any reports of injuries from the tornado at this time.
Several tornado warnings were issued in the region Saturday as severe thunderstorms that brought torrential downpour passed through.
There have also been reports of damages to trees and local properties.
Residents who witnessed the tornado near Goderich say it was just off Highway 21 around 5 p.m.
According to Hydro One, there are a few isolated outages near Chatsworth and Southampton affecting a couple hundred customers. The current estimated time for restoration is between noon and 8 p.m. today.
