The Mayor of Goderich says it is important the town work with neighbouring municipalities when closing beaches.
Since stay-at-home orders were issued by the province, the Goderich beach has been closed to the public.
Mayor John Grace says Goderich by-law officials did a good job of enforcement last summer along the Goderich shoreline.
By-law officers ensured social distance was maintained during the summer of 2020 along Goderich’s three beaches, and even closed off the shoreline when capacity was met.
Grace tells Country 104.9 News the town can do more to understand what happens beyond its own shoreline when rules are strongly enforced.
“How does that affect other communities, how Goderich operates?” Grace says.
“When we close our beaches, what happens to the parks up on top of the hill? What happens to other small communities up and down Lake Huron when Goderich closes its beaches? They become overcrowded.”
Grace says it is important that neighbouring communities along the shoreline have a coordinated approach in outdoor safety during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We need to have more dialogue with our neighbours and work collaboratively together, on… what does it mean when we open up our waterfront beaches during a pandemic.”
