Candian women’s rights advocates are warning against complacency regarding protections for abortion rights in the country.
Canada’s Foreign Affairs minister Melanie Joly also shared a similar warning when making comments in Rwanda at the Commonwealth Summit, saying “No country in the world, including Canada, is immune to what’s going on in the United States. And we already know that last year the Conservatives voted in favour of re-opening the debate of abortion in Canada.”
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says that there are people fighting hard to continue to gain rights, saying the decision was a “devastating setback. It shows how much standing up and fighting for rights matters every day… we can’t take anything for granted. We need to continue to stand strong and to defend everybody’s rights and freedoms.”
US Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi called yesterday’s decision “It’s a slap in the face to women about using their own judgment… to make their own decisions about their reproductive freedom.”
