The Municipality of Bluewater is echoing sentiments from weather officials, to avoid venturing onto ice surfaces on Lake Huron.
In a social media post, Bluewater officials say, “While the ice might look thick and stable, it is not! The lake underneath is constantly moving, breaking up the ice and pushing it back together, and making it weak.”
“Please enjoy the view from the safety of the shore.”
Experts studying the Great Lakes say ice coverage on the Great Lakes is historically low, at 2.4 per cent coverage at the end of January.
That is lower than the 11 per cent coverage during the same time in 2020.
The projected maximum ice coverage for the Great Lakes this year is 30 per cent — down from the average maximum of 53 per cent.
Peak ice cover is expected sometime in February or early March.
