The ice surface at the Maitland Recreation Centre in Goderich is being removed.
In a notice on their website, Goderich Minor Hockey says they were notified of the ice removal, following recommendations from the Town of Goderich.
The province began its second provincial lockdown December 26th, which was extended this month to at least February 19th.
Maitland Recreation Centre has been closed to the public since then.
“With no current use of the facility and therefore no revenue, maintaining the ice surface and the cost to continue to operate the refrigeration plant is an area that can be financially mitigated,” the MRC said to users in an e-mail.
“We understand the impact that this decision has on the entire community, including our seniors and youth, and we are optimistic that when it is safe to do so we will reopen the arena for our community to resume activities once again.”
Any affected ice rentals have been cancelled, and anyone with a rental does not need to contact the facility.
North Huron and Huron East have also opted to remove their ice surfaces.
