The Maitland Valley Conservation Authority is warning of possible damage to the Lake Huron shoreline, due to Fall and Winter storms.
While water levels in Lake Huron have not reached the historic highs of 1986, the MVCA says levels remain high enough to cause significant damage.
Water levels are expected to drop slightly in October, but will be very close to the October 2019 level, MVCA officials say.
Strong seasonal winds, combined with high water levels, can create intensified wave action, damage all manner of coastline ecosystems.
A pair of damaging storms in 2019 destroyed part of the shoreline boardwalk in Goderich, prompting the down to spend nearly $1 million to restore and reinforce its coastline.
Maitland Conservation’s Shoreline Technician Shannon Millar says, “Our stretch of shoreline features a lot of steep clay bluffs. Bluff failures are more likely when the bluffs are saturated with water and erosion is occurring at the base of the bluffs from wave action.”
