Flyers Stay With Wingham In PJHL Loss

Goderich | by Peter Jackson
Jeff Fritzley scored the lone Goderich goal in the 2-1 loss on Flyers' Pajama Toss Night

The Goderich Flyers managed to stay with division-leading Wingham in Provincial Junior Hockey League play Saturday, but eventually fell in a 2-1 defeat to the Ironmen.

The only Goderich goal came early, as Bryce Lee and Colton Quipp set up Jeff Fritzley for a shot that just cleared the goal line at 3:19 of the first period at the Maitland Rec Centre.

That precipitated a storm of packaged pajamas along with four teddy bears, in the Flyers' annual pajama toss in aid of the Huron County Christmas Bureau.

The promotion saw 65 sets of pajamas donated to the seasonal charity.

Goderich held onto its 1-0 lead until 6:23 of the second period, when Wingham's Dana Smith tallied; the game-winning goal was scored by Kyle Stanbury early in the final frame.

The Flyers did well to keep up with the normally fast-skating Ironmen, with goaltender Logan Vermunt occasionally looking spectacular in making 36 saves.

Despite the loss, Goderich kept pace with sixth-place Walkerton, who lost 8-3 at Mitchell Saturday.

The Flyers have five points on two wins, 19 losses and one tie, and trail Walkerton by three points in the Pollock Division standings.

One other PJHL Pollock Division game Saturday saw forward Michael Stefanelli lead Mount Forest with two goals and an assist, in the Patriots' 4-1 victory over Kincardine at the Davidson Centre.

The Flyers' home game against Mount Forest scheduled for Sunday afternoon at MRC was postponed due to poor weather and driving conditions, which cut into the PJHL schedule.

Goderich plays its next four games on the road, before returning to The Hangar to host Wingham on Saturday December 14th.

In the PJHL Yeck Division Saturday, forward Sam Dupuis paced Exeter with three points including two goals, as the Hawks defeated Aylmer 6-3.
